Data Product

A reusable package that turns organized data or research into an answer, tool, report, or decision aid.

Also known as: information product, dataset product, research data package

Definition

A data product turns raw facts into something another person or system can use. It includes the data, its source, field definitions, update date, and enough context to prevent a misleading reading. A research report can be a data product when its evidence is structured and reusable. A labeled set of examples for training or testing a machine learning model can also be a data product when its purpose, labels, and limits are documented.

Examples

  • An SEO workbook that joins query and landing-page results with a data dictionary
  • A research report with cited sources, tables, collection dates, and downloadable data
  • A local directory dataset with verified records and a repeatable update process
  • A labeled set of examples used to train or evaluate a machine learning model
